A perfect companion to our Italian Roast Espresso, this decaf shares many of the same rich and robust flavor qualities. It produces a strong, yet slightly sweet flavor and an excellent crema. These beans are slightly lighter then our Italian Roast, but darker than our French Roast. The CO2 method ensures a clean cup with minimal loss of flavor from the decaffeination process.
Unlike most of our decaf coffees, we use the CO2 Process to decaffeinate these beans. The carbon dioxide process was developed in Germany as a natural alternative to the Methylene Chloride process that has become the industry standard.
So, how does CO2 decaffeination work? The coffee beans are steamed and then soaked in liquid carbon dioxide in a high pressure environment which effectively moves the caffeine from the beans into the carbon dioxide. The “caffeinated carbon dioxide” can then be run through a filter to remove the caffeine, so the carbon dioxide can be reused to decaffeinate more beans. Recycling at its best!
